Fat Canada Tour 2009
NO USE FOR A NAME are one of independent music’s most dominant and everlasting forces; and nothing could solidify their firm grip on the underground more than their upcoming 9th proper studio release, The Feel Good Record of the Year. The band recorded in Ft. Collins, CO at the Blasting Room with legendary producer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag, Only Crime). This could very well be their best record to date, both in song quality and production value. The 14 song record is a perfect blend of all their previous albums and proves yet again the staying power of the band .Weather you are listening to No Use For A Name cd or watching them live they never disappoint.
Only Crime is a combination of 5 veterans of the punk/hardcore scene who have pooled their collective experience to create a truly refreshing musical statement. Fusing elements of heavy rock and roll with the furious energy of punk rock from the 1970’s & 80’s, Only Crime has also adopted the creative abandon pioneered by jazz’s seminal protagonists. The band’s sound is heavy without being the least bit “metal”, melodic without sounding “pop”, and experimental without treading into the arcane realm of “art” rock. While the members of Only Crime aren’t new, their music is like nothing you’ve heard before.
Only Crime was formed in 2002-2003 when vocalist Russ Rankin (Good Riddance) and guitarist Aaron Dalbec (Bane/Converge) realized they would have the time to pursue a band together; Soon Bill Stevenson (Descendents/ALL/Black Flag), who had produced projects for Russ and Zach separately, got wind of the project and, excited at the chance to play some drums and revisit a musical landscape he had helped pioneer, became the band’s drummer. The line up on this upcoming tour will be Russ Rankin – vocals, Aaron Dalbec – guitar, Matt Hoffman – guitar, Dan Kelly – bass and Luke Ray – drums.
Only Crime just demoed a handful of new songs and will be posting one of them online soon.
Pour Habit new to Fat Wreck Chords initially started by Steve and Chuck as a trio in 2005 in Compton, California, the band underwent a series of member changes and instrument swaps before landing on the perfect lineup of Chuck (vocals), Colin (drums), his brother Eric (guitar/vocals), Shaun (guitar) and Steve (bass/vocals)—and they haven’t looked back since. After gaining a local following performing with Authority Zero and Guttermouth and building an enthusiastic fan base in California, the group entered the studio in 2007 to record their debut full-length, Suiticide. “We barely had enough money for a week in the studio and that album is pretty much a live CD,” Colin explains, adding that his drum tracks were cut in one take. “It was a good learning experience and we’re proud of it.”
From there the band started playing even bigger shows with acts like Strung Out, the Adicts, the Expendables and Death By Stereo and before they knew it, they had sold more copies of Suiticide than they ever imagined they would. As luck would have it, Colin’s father was a studio musician and friend of Strung Out’s drummer Jordan Burns and eventually Colin convinced Strung Out to let Pour Habit open for them. Pour Habit’s impressive arrangements, infectious energy and mind-boggling musicianship made Burns an instant fan/cheerleader and he passed the band’s CD onto Fat Wreck Chords owner and NOFX front man Fat Mike who signed the band in 2009 after watching them play a handful of dates opening for his own band.
“Fat Mike told us that he was expecting to like two or three songs but he said it was a great album that he could release as it was before he put us in the studio,” Colin says sounding like he still can’t quite believe the band’s good fortune. “I’m still kind of overwhelmed by the whole thing.” Listening to Suiticide, it’s no surprise that Mike wanted to re-release the disc.
This year’s Fat Canada Tour promises to be high energy and have something for everyone…lot’s of bang for your buck!
